Che cosa spinge un individuo ad avventurarsi fuori dal noto e familiare verso l’inesplorato e inconoscibile? Per Fernando Pessoa, autore de “Il libro dell’inquietudine”, l’esperienza del viaggio esalta il senso di libertà. Eppure lo scrittore, che pure ha dedicato la gran parte della sua opera all’idea del viaggio, non ha mai lasciato la sua amata Lisbona.
Non aveva bisogno di andare lontano per sentirsi libero.
La serie Arctic Coordinates è stata realizzata nei 35 giorni trascorsi a bordo della nave cargo “Nordic Odyssey”*, che nell’estate del 2012 ha attraversato l’Artico dal porto Russo di Murmansk verso la Cina, con un carico di 70 mila tonnellate di minerali di ferro. Era la prima volta che una nave mercantile percorreva il “passaggio a nord-est” (Northern Sea Route), una rotta alternativa resa possibile dai cambiamenti climatici. Il cargo, preceduto da una rompighiaccio, si è fatto largo tra i ghiacci del Mar Glaciale Artico, e dopo aver attraversato il nebbioso Stretto di Bering, ha proseguito il suo viaggio lungo le estremità orientali della Russia, oltrepassando il Giappone prima di approdare in un porto di recente costruzione sulle coste della Cina.

What drives an individual to venture out of the known and familiar to the unexplored and unknowable? For Fernando Pessoa, author of "The book of restlessness", the experience of travel enhances the sense of freedom. Yet the writer, who also dedicated most of his work to the idea of travel, never left his beloved Lisbon. He didn't need to go far to feel free. The project, first commissioned by the US magazine The New Yorker, was made during a thirty-five day journey on the “Nordic Odyssey” cargo ship, which transported, in the summer of 2012, 70,000 tons of iron ore from the Russian port of Murmansk to China across the Arctic. It was the first time ever that a cargo boat sailed the Northern Sea Route- an alternative transportation route made available with the onset of global warming. The ship, led by an icebreaker, waded through the ice of the Arctic waters, crossed the foggy Bering Strait and continued along the fareastern parts of Russia, passing by Japan before arriving to a newly built port on the shores of China…..

….Il viaggio si è presto trasformato in routine, e la percezione dello spazio e del tempo, appiattendosi, ha tolto ogni entusiasmo alla consapevolezza di essere in un luogo unico. La noia, il lento scorrere del tempo, l’impossibilità della fuga sono realtà quotidiane per i marinai che intraprendono questo viaggio per guadagnarsi da vivere. L’idea romantica dell’Artico – un viaggio esotico intrapreso da uomini di mare coraggiosi – evapora di fronte alla dura realtà che si impone a uomini costretti a trascorrere interi mesi lontano dalle proprie famiglie, sopraffatti dalla cocente sensazione del tempo che si disfa.

Come Odisseo, il loro unico desiderio è fare ritorno a casa. In questo modo la brama d’avventura si trasforma in una trappola; la sete di nuove impressioni cede a considerazioni profonde. Questo ribaltamento diventa visibile attraverso le immagini che compongono la serie Arctic Coordinates. Come i rettangoli di colore di Mark Rothko, le fotografie di Davide Monteleone sono espressive senza essere descrittive, evocative ma prive di affettazione. E la cortina dello spazio vuoto, che finisce col perdere la sua profondità e definizione, genera uno stato meditativo che è anche il contesto ideale per intraprendere un viaggio verso se stessi.
* Questo lavoro è stato commissionato per l’articolo Polar Express, pubblicato dalla rivista The New Yorker nel 2012.

Bio

Davide Monteleone (nato nel 1974, in Italia) è un artista e narratore che usa la fotografia e il video come sue principali forme di espressione. Dal 2003 vive tra l'Italia e la Russia perseguendo progetti indipendenti a lungo termine, concentrandosi principalmente sull'area post-sovietica. Ha pubblicato il suo primo libro Dusha, Russian Soul nel 2007, seguito da La Linea Inesistente, nel 2009, Red Thistle nel 2012 e Spasibo nel 2013. È impegnato in attività educative, tiene regolarmente conferenze presso università e laboratori di insegnamento a livello internazionale. Davide è membro della VII agenzia fotografica. Il suo lavoro è stato ampiamente esposto alla Saatchi Gallery di Londra; Rencontres de Arles, Francia; Museo Trento e Rovereto, Rovereto, Italia; Palazzo delle Esposizioni - Roma, Italia; Casa della fotografia, Amburgo, Germania; Eurodeputato, Parigi, Francia. Questa è stata la sua prima mostra con ILEX Gallery ..The voyage soon turned routine, flattening the sense of time and space, negating any excitement of being somewhere unique. The boredom, the slow passing of time, the impossibility to escape – is daily life for the sailors who undertake this journey to earn their livelihood. The romanticized image of the Arctic - of exotic travel, of brave seamen – fades to the harsh reality faced by the men who spend months away from their families, overwhelmed by the utter feeling of time laid waste.

Like Odysseus, their only wish is to return home. So the lust for adventure becomes a trap; the thirstiness for new impressions gives way to deep thinking. And this switch of mood becomes visible throughout the Arctic Coordinates series – like Mark Rothko’s color field paintings, Davide Monteleone’s images are expressive without being descriptive, thought provoking without becoming literary. And the leaden emptiness of space, eventually losing its deepness and sharpness, creates a meditative mood and a perfect setting to embark on a journey towards oneself.

Davide Monteleone (b. 1974, Italy) is an artist and storyteller using photography and video as his main forms of expression. Since 2003, he has lived between Italy and Russia pursuing long-term independent projects, mainly focusing on the post-Soviet area. He published his first book Dusha, Russian Soul in 2007, followed by La Linea Inesistente, in 2009, Red Thistle in 2012 and Spasibo in 2013. He is engaged with educational activities, regularly lecturing at universities and teaching workshops internationally. Davide is a member of the VII Photo agency. His work has been widely exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London; Rencontres de Arles, France; Museo Trento e Rovereto Rovereto, Italy; Palazzo Esposizioni - Rome, Italy; House of Photography, Hamburg, Germany; MEP, Paris, France.
