....Durante questo workshop di sei giorni presso 10b Photography, Teun van der Heijden, insieme al fotografo Jan Rosseel, affronteranno tutti gli aspetti necessari a trasformare un progetto fotografico in un libro. Le principali materie di studio saranno il photoediting e il processo compilativo, lo sviluppo concettuale, alcuni elementi di design quali la scelta della dimensione, il tipo di carta, la griglia e la tipografia, e un’introduzione alla stampa. Il workshop è pensato per fotografi interessati a realizzare un libro a partire da un concept, una selezione e una sequenza destinate appositamente a questo scopo. E’ auspicabile che i fotografi sappiano stimolare i propri colleghi al fine di aprire un dibattito all’interno del quale siano affrontati i problemi creativi e concettuali che sorgono nel passaggio dalle immagini singole al libro fotografico, inteso come oggetto all’interno del mondo della fotografia contemporanea.
“Nonostante viviamo in un'era digitale, si registra una crescente attenzione verso il libro fotografico cartaceo come mai in precedenza. Dall’invenzione dei telefoni cellulari dotati di macchina fotografica abbiamo iniziato ad usare la fotografia come linguaggio visuale all’interno di contesti sempre diversi, dal colloquiale al formale, un linguaggio che non ha confini geografici o nazionali. Attraverso internet entriamo continuamente in contatto con il resto del mondo, ma ancora dobbiamo abituarci e sfruttare al massimo questo allargamento di prospettiva all’interno della comunicazione visuale. Il libro fotografico rappresenta la solidità, qualcosa a cui possiamo letteralmente aggrapparci. E’ un oggetto tangibile e, nonostante si tratti di una riproduzione, contiene in sé l’aura dell’oggetto originale - in questo caso la fotografia. Il libro fotografico contemporaneo può essere visto come un romanzo visuale. L’agenzia di design Heijdens Karwei disegna i suoi libri fotografici tenendo fermamente presente questo concetto”.

Durate il workshop, Teun e Jan condivideranno la propria esperienza nel lavoro di ideazione che sta alla base del libro fotografico e della sua produzione, coniugando i punti di vista del fotografo e del grafico. Insieme ai partecipanti, affronteranno tutti le fasi del processo di creazione di un libro, dall’ideazione alla sua realizzazione, stimolando i partecipanti a pensare al di fuori del proprio orizzonte concettuale, per arrivare a creare un oggetto unico capace di coronare la visione del fotografo. Il workshop consiste in lezioni frontali, lezioni pratiche e lavoro individuale sul proprio libro. Il risultato sarà la produzione di un ‘dummy’ da parte di ognuno dei partecipanti. Il workshop sarà diviso in due parti. Durante la prima parte (Giorno 1 e 2) gli studenti saranno incoraggiati a condividere le proprie idee attraverso la discussione e lo scambio. La seconda parte (Dal giorno 3 al Giorno 6) sarà più personale e gli studenti lavoreranno sull’idea messa a punto durante la prima parte del workshop, al fine di produrre il proprio ‘dummy’. Durante ques’ultima parte, Teun e Jan aiuteranno gli studenti e li guideranno nella risoluzione dei problemi e con la rilegatura del ‘dummy’. At the six day workshop at 10b Photography Teun van der Heijden, together with photographer Jan Rosseel, will teach about all the aspects of how to turn a body of work into a book. Subjects will be the editing and compiling process, concept development, design issues like choice of size, paper, grid and typography, and the guidance of the printing process.
..The workshop is designed for photographers who are interested in working on a concept, edit and sequence for a book. All the photographers will be expected to participate in pushing each other creatively and conceptually in discussing ways to problem solve the medium shift between singular images to the book as an object in the current environment of photography. “Although we live in a digital age there is more attention for the paper photo book then ever before. Since the invention of the camera phone we have started to use photography as a visual language in a broader spectrum from the colloquial to the formal, a language that has no geographical or national boundaries. On the net we are constantly in contact with the rest of the world. We still have fully embrace and adjust to this new frontier in visual communication. The paper photo book represents solidity, something we can literarily hold on to. It is a tangible object and, despite being a reproduction, it has the aura of the original object, in this case the photograph. The contemporary photo book can be seen as a visual novel. It is with this in mind that graphic design agency Heijdens Karwei designs their photography books.”

Aim of the workshop

During the workshop, Teun and Jan will share their experience in conceptual work with photography books and photography book production, combining the points of view of photographer and graphic designer. Together with the participants, they will go through the main stages of book production, from the concept to completion. Challenging the students to think outside their framework and create a unique object that complements the photographers’ vision. The workshop consists of lectures, practical classes and work on the students’ own book projects resulting in the production of a dummy book/publication by each of the participants.

The workshop is divided in two parts. The first part (Day one & Day two) in which students are encouraged to share ideas and spark creative genius discussing and thinking about concepts for each other. The second part (Day three / Day six) is more individual in which students will work on an idea conceived in the first part of the workshop and create a dummy. During this part Teun and Jan will guide the students and help with ideas, problem solving and probably stitching and gluing…..

....Requisiti

Il workshop è destinato a quei fotografi che abbiano già a disposizione un progetto e che ne abbiano pianificata la pubblicazione. Oltre alle immagini, i partecipanti sono incoraggiati a presentare altri materiali capaci di essere incorporati alla pubblicazione, come testi, elementi grafici, etc. Si consiglia caldamente di mettere a disposizione anche le fotografie scartate in precedenza (seconde e terze scelte) e le fotografie su cui ancora si hanno dei dubbi o che sembrano meno interessanti.E’ obbligatorio avere a disposizione un computer portatile su cui siano istallati Adobe InDesign e Photoshop, e stampe di prova del proprio progetto per l’editing dei primi giorni. Si potrà disporre dei servizi di una tipografia professionale per la stampa dei file di prova e per la stampa e rifilatura del ‘dummy’ finale. Alcuni strumenti di rilegatura di base verranno messi a disposizione dai docenti.Il workshop si terrà in lingua inglese, l'iscrizione è aperta a studenti di ogni nazionalità.

..Requirements

The workshop is aimed at photographers with a substantial project or body of work who are planning a publication. In addition to the images, the participants are encouraged to bring any other materials that can be potentially incorporated into their publication, such as texts, graphic elements, etc. It is highly recommended to bring along your B and C selections of pictures, including pictures you have doubts about or mind find less interesting. A laptop with Indesign and Photoshop is a must, as well as small prints of your project for editing on the first days. A professional typography will print trials and final versions of the dummies. Basic binding tools will be made available by the tutors. lectures will be held in English.....
