La mostra Mare Omnis nasce dalla ricerca fotografica di Francesco Zizola lungo le coste del Mediterraneo: Grecia, Puglia, Calabria, Sicilia e Sardegna, in quel territorio che ha visto la nascita di molte tradizioni culturali e di un paesaggio architettonico e antropologico proprio sotto il dominio greco, in seguito segnato da popoli marinari molto diversi tra loro, in un sincretismo che oggi possiamo cogliere nei gesti e nelle ritualità dei suoi abitanti. Costruire i propri strumenti di lavoro, gettare le reti in mare, trascorrere giorni e mesi in attesa della pesca, essere soggetti alle leggi della natura, compongono quel patrimonio di saperi legati alla prossimità con il mare e ad una vita in rapporto con esso che oggi sono sostituiti da metodi di pesca intensivi e industriali, un pericolo non solo per l’ambiente, ma anche per il carattere delle città marittime e dei suoi abitanti. Omnis rappresenta tutto ciò che è parte della natura marina, esseri umani, pesci e utensili da pesca compresi, colti volutamente da un’uguale prospettiva, che fotografa gesti e volti di uomini e di animali in un chiaroscuro sacrale, come le icone di un rito che si compie da millenni.

I volti dei dodici pescatori - come apostoli contemporanei e testimoni di un rapporto ancora personale con i pesci e il mare - fanno parte di una selezione di immagini potenti, in grado di restituire il sentimento di una relazione simbiotica che ricuce quella separazione tra uomo e natura adottata dalla società contemporanea. Un lavoro fotografico che ritrae momenti di vita marittima carichi di pathos è qualcosa di più di una testimonianza, non è nemmeno una volontà di memoria su tradizioni che si stano perdendo o un’accusa didascalica agli attuali metodi di pesca intensivi. Piuttosto è un racconto che risiede nell’ambito del cerimoniale e del rituale, compiuto sia come individui che come comunità in rapporto all’ambiente. E’ un modo di vivere la natura che non prevede un continuo progresso e non è la semplice somma di conoscenze, ma parla il linguaggio del mare.

Mare Omnis è perciò una ricerca sulle leggi della natura, sul loro incontro con l’uomo e su ciò che questo produce: le tradizioni dei popoli in rapporto all’ambiente

The exhibition Mare Omnis is the result of Francesco Zizola’s photographic research along the coasts of the Mediterranean: Greece, Puglia, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia.This territory has seen the birth of many cultural traditions and an architectural and anthropological landscape just under the Greek rule. It was then marked by very different maritime peoples, in a syncretism that today we can grasp in the gestures and rituals of its inhabitants. Building their own working tools, throwing nets into the sea, spending days and months waiting for fishing, being conditioned by the laws of nature, building that heritage of knowledge related to proximity to the sea and a life in relation to it that today are replaced by intensive and industrial fishing methods. These methods are a danger not only to the environment, but also to the character of maritime cities and their inhabitants. Mare Omnis is all that is part of marine nature, including men, fish and fishing gear. These subjects are deliberately projected in an equal perspective, which photographs the gestures and faces of men and animals in a sacred chiaroscuro, like the icons of a ritual that has been going on for thousands of years.

The faces of the twelve fishermen - as contemporary apostles and witnesses of a still personal relationship with fish and the sea - are part of a selection of powerful images, capable of restoring the feeling of a symbiotic relationship that recreates that separation between man and nature adopted by contemporary society. A photographic work that portrays moments of maritime life full of pathos is something more than a testimony, it is not even a desire for memory about traditions that are being lost or a didactic accusation of current intensive fishing methods. Rather, it is a story that resides in the area of ceremony and ritual, performed both as individuals and as a community in relation to the environment. It is a way of experiencing nature that does not require continuous progress and is not the simple sum of knowledge, but speaks the language of the sea.
